How Yoga Can Help You Become a Better Parent
Being a parent is one of the most challenging and overwhelming things in the world, and it comes with huge responsibilities, yet we are given very little guidance about how to do it effectively. Many of us end up yelling, reprimanding, threatening, and/or lecturing our kids on a consistent basis. Although we crave better connections with our children, our parenting strategies often just seem to cause frustration and anxiety for everyone.
Through the lens of yoga philosophy, Daniella offers practical tools to support letting go of the parenting patterns that do not serve our relationship with our children and introduces new tools for more effective parenting and connection. Here is a summary of the two major elements of the work:

What is behind our children’s behavior? Supporting emotional outbursts and finding compassion.
When our children are behaving “badly,” we often take it personally instead of looking at these occurrences from their perspectives. When our children are behaving “badly,” we often take it personally instead of looking at these occurrences from their perspectives. We will consider our children's needs and what they are trying to communicate through their behavior. Understanding the underlying causes of our children’s behavior will help us to
- understand the common needs of all children and the needs that are often behind their behavior;
- learn to "hold space" for them and their big feelings. Holding space is the practice of being there for someone without judging, criticizing, or commenting on their emotions or taking their behavior personally;
- find compassion for our children, even in their darkest moments;
- be more present and mindful in our relationships;
- listen and communicate more consciously;
- appreciate our children and others for who they are without judgment and without trying to change them;
- lead by example instead of lecturing with words;
- incorporate more joy and silliness into everyday life;
- truly love unconditionally.
What is behind our behavior as parents? Non-judgmental study of ourselves.
The way we were raised and the insecurities we learned during childhood influence both how we parent our children and how we interact with our loved ones. These childhood experiences affect how we are triggered and how we react when things don’t go according to plan. Additionally, societal norms influence the expectations we place on our children. We will explore the patterns we get stuck in and help break unconscious, negative cycles by

These childhood experiences affect how we are triggered and how we react when things don’t go according to plan. Additionally, societal norms influence the expectations we place on our children. We will explore the patterns we get stuck in and help break unconscious, negative cycles by
- studying our self in a non-judgmental way, so we can really understand the root causes of how we react to our children;
- learning to pause every time we are triggered, so we can respond rather than react;
- practicing productive engagement with our own emotions rather than ignoring or denying them. By "sitting with" our emotions, we are better able to deal with them and to avoid dumping these unprocessed feelings onto our children. We also learn to find more acceptance of our children's emotions;
- re-parenting our inner-child so that we can meet our own personal needs. By doing so, our childhood experiences no longer need to drive our adult behaviors and relationships.
What is Daniella's Background in Parenting?
Daniella used to be a mum who yelled, threatened, and tried to be controlling of her son (now 16 years old) because this was the behavior that was modelled to her. In the process, she felt lost as a mother and was very disappointed that her parenting actions were not living up to her ideals. Once she made a concerted effort to apply the philosophy of yoga to her parenting -- and after taking many parenting and psychology classes and workshops -- her approach to how she interacts with her son, and how he responds, has completely changed. Incorporating yoga philosophy and principles has made her happier about her parenting approach and her son feels more listened to and appreciated. She is a more confident and kind-hearted mother, and her connection with her son has grown. This transformation in her relationship with her son, inspired Daniella to share this approach with other parents. She has been teaching Parenting with Yoga for over 5 years with many positive reviews from parents who feel that this has transformed their family lives (see reviews below):

**The retreat was so beneficial to me and reshaped my perspective on parenting. I am now a "conscious" parent in practice; I am not all the way there -- still tons of practice to be had -- but the tools that you gave me are a tremendous support for me as I navigate having a loving respectful and fun relationship with my son and also with myself.
**We (my husband and I) went on a parenting retreat with Daniella in Utuado and it was life changing. The food was amazing, the setting beautiful and serene and Daniella’s approach was the perfect balance between enlightening and measured. A more pushy person could have gone too far with shadow work and getting into places too deep but she perfectly walked the line of looking into your past to see how it impacts your present while staying grounded in your current reality so that you could truly grow as the person and parent you want to be. There was a wonderful mix of people from different backgrounds, with kids of different ages, and I know we all walked away with something special.
**I am thankful for you all joining the group and cohesively creating a safe environment to learn from each other and listen to honest stories about hard parenting and relationships with our children and giving me a different perspective. I feel like I have grown individually and together [with my partner] during these classes and I will forever remember you all.
**I just wanted to say that last night’s session was so productive for me. I kept thinking I had so many needs that were not met [when I was a child]. I realized a while ago that I had to meet those for myself in order to be a better parent, but it was revelatory to actually list those needs in black and white. I will continue to focus on those needs for myself AND my children at the same time. Thank you for sharing your story. It is inspiring to see how you could overcome your lacks and become a better parent. This course is amazing. Thank you so much.
